Finished ! a big word when we are talking motorcycle restoration ,a term I like is practical completion because once a bike is registered and running, the terrible temptation is to ride it and enjoy it . I am claiming that this one is my third restoration or rebuild, the others being a swing arm 500 Ajay then the 1970 Commando and a Model 7 500 Domi .This Norton is based on a 16H military frame and little else from a 16 H .It has occupied my mind and hands for years ,the terrible decision between the high or the low exhaust ,which would look best ? which would look original ? which would I like best ?.Would I go high system with the exhaust I had ,or should I put a low pipe and a brooklands can on it ? I would debate these issues late at night with an empty beer bottle, and after waking at 2.30 am, some times on e bay I would spy a part and think yes ! then I would go cold on the idea . Finally I jumped and ordered a engine pipe from the UK for a 500 T thinking this is my Christmas present to myself for Christmas 2014 , happy Christmas Norton . This outlines my decision making process for the myriad decisions I made along the way ,after thumbing through the pictures in Roy Bacons book, Norton Singles , Ijust loved the low slung look of the pre war Nortons, low seat, girder forks, thin tank, dolls head gearbox , two stay rigid frame, very low ground clearance ,the oil tank the mudguards the whole motorcycle, lock stock and barrel, I just have to build one of these .

Where to start? well a frame is the usual kick off point, but I started with the gearbox while searching for a frame, eventually I got one, I had most of a model 19 bottom end and started looking for the rest ,forks Indian repro bought second hand and so on . As a matter of fact I've decided to list where I got some of the bits from

I kind of like these pics from an angle at the rear and looking down .This shows a second hand muffler from one of the swap meetings the new K70 Dunlop rear tyre and the old style number plate bracket this one should have the tail light centred in a projection on the right hand top corner ,if I pick up the correct one Ill swap them over .
The drive side shows MO1 maggy this one has to be a clockwise one, hard to find for sure , well actually you just need a cam plate that is a clockwise one ,hours of work have gone into the chain cases, they always seem to be badly knocked about, some by having a primary chain derailed inside . The old style battery cases are a bit more expensive than the later ones I got this one from the UK can't remember the company . You may notice the footrest cranks cast in bronze by Manx Classic Spares I thought they looked so good I didn't bother with the black paint they won't rust either .
This is the pretty side of most bikes , all that polished alloy ,what a bastard to clean ! all those nooks and crannies with split pins poking out to rip at your hands .This is the famous Dolls Head gearbox that evolved into the AMC unit by the middle fifties the gears in this box are generally the same as the later lay down box the three bearings are interchangeable with their counterpart in the last 850 Commando and I think the lay shaft fits too although I believe the later ones are stronger .The gears fitted to the AMC box have a different profile and are not compatible with the earlier ones .Pre dolls head boxes [Sturmey Archer] have gears marked EIV the dolls head lay down have gears marked with a N8000 number that is the part number like N8043 and the AMC gears are often stamped AH also some have a lathe ring through the dogs The exhaust was purchased from Feked in the UK its actually a 500 T part that fitted up nicely
FRONT END
Indian copy of Webb girders 1950's hub laced into dunlop 21 inch mudcatcher rim with stainless spokes .Just fitted a new Avon rib tyre , the mud guard was made by Adam Higgins [THE EARLY YEARS] who can make anything you want he's at the Ballarat and Bendigo swaps his phone number is 03 5148 3207 This guy is an artisan and very well priced .I had to extend the brake lever and make up a heap of spacers to centre the wheel in the forks .The original would have had the QD brake and hub set which is much wider ,Norton did fit a one piece hub/brake before the war but only in the Inters and some ES2's and would have been combined with a cradle frame .The the clunkers were left with the open diamond frame the tractor mudguards the square oil tanks and the wide girders
I managed to find the correct cotton reel hub a new sprocket and the correct brake plate. I pulled this alloy rim off my Commando and replaced it with a SS item ,home made chain guard mudguard stays repro rear stand from Rod [Portland ] and repro number plate bracket original lucas tail light actually still had olive drab paint on it .
HOW DO YOU ROTATE A PIC ????
Can't work out how to rotate this pic ,I found this transfer and thought it would look good on the tank ,I have no idea where they should be placed or on what model .The work on the tank was really an experiment because the primer /filler is a 2 pac paint .I then picked a colour that was a acrylic [Jaguar silver metalic ] then put the stickers on and put a 2 pac clear over the lot .I was expecting all sorts of trouble but it appears these products are compatible
The motor has now been bolted up after fitting a very good used big end bearing, three new main rollers a new small end bush new piston rings and gudgeon from JP in Adelaide , cylinder resleeved to standard bore . New valves , guides and springs from Norvil .I reseated the valves and made new spring retainers from 4140 all nuts studs screws and washers I re made in stainless with the exception of the head studs . The next job is to get some 2023 aluminium 10 mm tube or some 4140 and make the push rods , order a pipe from Feked in the UK and then I'm ready for a start ? fit a chain and I'm ready for a ride .
At last it looks like a bike ! the main difference being the wheels , in the last post I had the hubs and brakes sorted but no rims . I was in the fortunate position of having bought a 21 " alloy rim at the Bendigo swap two years ago and having a 19 " alloy rim on the front of my Commando, so I ordered a new 19 " stainless rim and stainless spoke sets for the front and back of the model 18 . I fitted the new SS rim with a good set of zinc spokes onto the Commando and spoked up both alloys with the SS spokes, I had a hiccup with spoke lengths [ my fault ] and had to get 10 more spokes 10 mm longer than the ones I had , Fastline Spokes in Broadford were great and had ten custom made and delivered in less than a week ! Fastline spokes is run by Bruce Lotherington phone 0411844169 or e- mail fastline7@bigpond.com

I recently rang another Norton man in Tassie looking for parts and realised that I had got from Steve the frame ,a brake drum ,crank pinion , rocker box , push rod tubes and gland nuts and some more bits I've forgotten forks from Canberra gearbox shell from Perth bottom end Sydney tank from up on the Murray , could think of this as a "interstate " The bottom end has been interesting to say the least , the cases I am using are stamped 1937 on the inside in small letters and on the outside are stamped 82 x 113 and the serial number on the other side ,they came with a steel crank and 7 1/2 " conrod , but I will be using a pair of cast iron wheels and 7 " rod from a 490 cc motor .The timing chest cover that I will use is actually a 1938 or 39 as it has no oil pressure tell tale and the timing cover has 3 screws and no oval ridge ,I think Norton ran tell tale and ridged cover with 2 screws until 1937 and then changed over . I might add that the cover in the pic is not the one I will use ,it is a 3 screw cover but has the tell tale as well , who knows if there was a model with ridged cover that had 3 screws ???
A barrel of laughs .... Norton motors with open valves[ up to 1938] had parallel push rod tubes ,logicaly enough and would be the norm in the industry at the time , but in 1938 when the company closed in the valvegear the rocker ball ends ended up closer together at the top with both covers almost touching . This was the start of the famous ES2 motor look with the tapering to the top pushrod covers that can be picked out on old photos identifing the bike as a Norton .The next change come in 1948 when they changed the crankcase deleting the finger followers shrinking the timing chest and taking a few mm off the flywheel , the rocker box became one piece instead of three and likewise the rockers .At the top the ball ends actually spread a little but the bottom end now centred over the cam spindles and not overhung on the fingers . So from 1948 to about 1955 the tapered tubes stayed .

So I will now refer to this restoration as a model 18 ,I posted a few pics when the frame and forks were in primer so as you can see I have moved forward a bit.

I was convinced to try using a two pac paint on the frame and forks as I am told it has a better resistance to fuel spillage ,I suppose I'll find out later ,in the past I have used enamel bought by the litre at the paint shop, pressure pac enamel , high temp pressure pac and acrylic so I have a bit of a mix certainly don't use the enamel pressure pacs they wash off with petrol .
The wide girder forks are designed to take the QD hubs of which I cannot find anywhere so I decided to fit a later model hub to the front end .This required three bits of engineering firstly make an axle out of 304 stainless with spacers nuts and washers to bring the wheel centre in the forks .Secondly I repeated the treatment of the Domi and replaced the RH wheel bearing with a sealed bearing and then removed the seal from the hub side only then I shortened the bearing spacer by about 4 mm , this allows the double row ball to slide in enough to fit a garter seal to the LHS of the hub, the seal was 40 x 25x 7 mm so now the brake plate spacer has moved in and the plate is scraping so I then turned up a new spacer with the 4 mm added to its length and created a polished 25 mm diameter for the seal to contact , I now expect that the grease will stay in the hub and not on the brake shoes .Lastly the brake torque bracket had to be fabricated and fitted to the back plate , the back plate was a roadholder type with one of the pivots extended to engage a slot in the fork leg ,so I drilled out one and unbolted the other , turned up two new pivots with rivet ends and riveted the torque bracket on as per original .
The oil tank mounts , once again not the correct tank but it looks great and can be made to fit ,this tank is off a later model that has been fitted with a lay down gearbox , I ground the welds and removed the original bracket and made a new setup to get the clearances right from the frame . This tank has a rounded front , the correct item is rather squared off
The forks , these are Indian made which I bought off e bay for about half what the Indians want for them .I think the original buyer was probably disappointed with the quality and was able to find something better .I started by stripping them down and working with die grinder, files and emery tape and tidying up all the castings then body filler and spot putty .I managed to get steering damper friction discs from BMH trading [ see my favourites list ] and made new serrated washers and pins for the check springs out of stainless , still looking for 18 mm hex to replace the rest of the nuts .The work continues , if I hit a problem in one area I start on another bit , next is to get a spoke set and have a go at lacing the front wheel. my hold up items are a QD hud for the rear , a rear stand and rear chain guard and enough bits to make a clockwise maggy .
I have included a pic of a newspaper article that explains a few of the design features , inventors being inventive have experimented with valve gear for sometime , I believe one motorcycle maker produced a sleeve valve motor with a liner inside the bore which moved up and down by way of a cam to get the ports to coincide ,we see side valve ,overhead valve ,inlet over exhaust [harley and land rover] over head camshaft , DOHC , triple OHC [7R 3A AJS ] desmodronic valves and in two stroke motors we have piston valve and disc valve assisted by reeds and other stuff .

In the case of four stroke motors the idea is to reduce reciprocating weight in the valve train, as when anything moves in one direction and then has to be reversed it must come to a stop, and to get it moving again requires the greater energy investment [ greatest rate of change ]. Reduction of reciprocating weight is the object of the designers and also simplification of the engine will help in lots of ways these principles apply to suspension components too.Interesting to consider the design of the Wankel rotary and a design by the Australian Ralph Sarich
This motor has been in storage for decades and been assembled into a frame so the general public can experience the creativity of the inventors , a quick look on google shows William Ronald Deane holds US patent 3730161 filed May 28 1971 . I seem to remember a rotary valve design fitted to another Norton shown in Roy Bacons book Norton Singles but this differs in that the Deane valve is a sphere fitted with rings that are pegged to prevent rotation and snap offs in the ports [ just like two strokes ] I had a chat with the guys that did all the spanner work and they didn't think the motor produced any more power than the 16 H , it started first kick every time and sat and idled beautifully . The cylinder had been made from a compressor cylinder and the head is machined from solid, what kind of steel? I don't know , I think the text says the valve rotates at one quarter crank speed and the chain drive comes off the vestigial camshaft and th
e last reduction would be on the two sprockets .
All in all this is an amazing exhibit and drew a lot of attention from the more technical minded punters at the rally, the inventors also made a head to suit a small honda single but no one seems to know where its gone, perhaps Harold Holt had it under his arm when he swam off to that Russian sub or will it turn up on a lawn mower one day ? better check your shed !
On a previous post I wrote about the good old days [ before Insurance Company Liability ] when the talent and imagination of the Swap Meet Junkie could be displayed at the meeting by way of a motorised shopping trollie / esky on wheels . Who needs a buggie ? you say, well ,if you find a set of tyres for that Morris Minor or even a bottom end for a Beeza, you are gunna need a buggie of some sort to get the treasure back to the carpark, and that might be a long haul . You could make a couple of trips back to the ute but think of all the rare bits that have been snapped up by dealers and sent overseas while you dither ferrying the gold to the car , you need a buggie to suit you own collecting style and volume , where to start ? Hell we're gunna do what all the bike manufactures did before the design stage , we'll take a good look at whats out there , pick the best points, trash the bad bits, produce an economical prototype and do the on ground testing . John 'O' Groats to Lands End and 50 laps of Brooklands .That should do the trick , now check out the sly pics I took while working under cover at the last Bendigo Swap Meeting around 17 th November so this stuff is state of the art, none of your old technology here . Click on the pics to blow them up

This was the only motorised cart I saw at Bendigo this year and the organisers would only have allowed it because the owner had one prosthetic leg . I can't remember the details of the prime mover but you can see the rear slicks and that the trailer is single axle , what a shame they banned these rigs as they contributed to the feel of the meeting so much .
This guy's in a hurry , basic format is a dragster typerfied by large slicks at rear, narrow disc wheels on the front , curious transverse front suspension, T model Ford style and using non stressed mild steel body [ this could lead to failure at extreme speed ] His treasure is a 1950's style radio and some other junk I can't make out .
The most common type of buggie [bag trollie BT ], this one with folding frame finished in red oxide primer [rarely seen these days ] and inflateable tyres ,its got that home made look to it .Note the tub is the type bought at K mart or others ,as in the past the Sherrif has been patroling the swaps policing the theft of milk crates. This is a blast from the past , not a purpose made ,swap meet buggie {SWB] at all but is in fact a trailer designed to attach to the carrier of a push bike .
Main construction packing case tray, pram wheels on pram axle and 1/2 inch GWIP drawbar / handle note tray is a stressed member , this unit would be hard work in the loose granitic sand that had been spread over much of the grounds .Looks like he's scored a second WW gerry can and is hiding more stuff under a briquette bag ...
Another variation of the BT with a different tray , stackable with slots mouled into the sides , perhaps pinched from a greengrocer or a fishmonger .This guy has hooked his backpack on the SWB and is towing rather than pushing, a risky practice as treasure could be borrowed and not returned
Members, I believe can rent a site ,build some manner of shed and install a large boiler in it, or they can park a travelling hut [ like a gypsy caravan ] live in it for the meetings and whenever they come to work on their machinery . I am led to believe that there are always people camped in vans there working on the machines and keeping an eye on the stuff that is too big to lock away .
Its not all about steam, the show attracts vintage and veteran cars, trucks and motorcycles ,oil engines ,military vehicles , earthworks machinery , models of every thing boats, trains ,aircraft , real aircraft engines and lots more stuff I've forgotten . But the real attraction with this show is that its dynamic , you would walk down a rutted gravel track and move to the left to alloy a working scale model traction engine to pass , on your left you could see a steam shovel operating a drag line just tip its load on a pile , lots of the sheds that have boilers run pipes out the back as an exhaust that puff little steam clouds out in the lanes .Steam has an unusual smell with that hint of oil ,steam whistles blow all the time, you can hear the breaking down saw from a working saw mill and in the back ground some sort of fairground music machine ,as you approach the oil engine area the pop pop pop of these engines grow louder and the other noises fade away . The highlight of the show is the grand parade, where everything on wheels does a lap of the oval and the crowd watch as a commentary is broadcast over the PA , its very impressive to see so many of these massive traction engines gently moving over the ground .
Lovely twin port 500 Norton Steve Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10266332455434664712noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250848875433872905.post-1357435479259410922012-10-23T15:02:00.000-07:002012-10-24T12:32:27.080-07:00Weekend Ride to Broadford Classic Races The Historic Motorcycle Racing Association of Victoria held the 31 st Southern Classic race on the weekend of 20 and 21 st of October at the State Motorcycle Complex , Broadford Victoria Australia .
This is a grass roots race meet which provides an entry point for those who love to ride and compete without needing a fortune behind you , you will however need a couple of mates a good toolkit and a bike trailer beside the obvious bike . The racers range from the slickest teams with immaculate bikes and gear to some of the roughest machines you have ever seen [one of which won its race ] being a classic meet ,almost all the riders were old enough to know better but shelved the common sense for the weekend , we did too .
It has become the habit of our rider group to attend this meeting as matter of great urgency , we all love the casual organisation of the meeting , for instance Jules picked up four free tickets at a hill climb two weeks earlier so it was free entry for us , parking is anywhere you like , food and drinks available ,camp on site , you can stand beside the starting line [two metres from the bikes ] and wander through the pits at will .I think the ticket are about ten dollars , program five they sell some quality shirts and stuff and they have the club members on the counters giving a nice feel to the place .
The format for us getting up to Broadford is preceded by a series of text messages phone calls and even a conference call [ may need to take minutes next year ] eventually we decided I'd meet with Andy in Ballarat and both Commandos to meet with two ZX14 's at Ballan and all ride up together via Trentham , Woodend ,Lancefield , Kilmore , Broadford , and to the track . Perfect weather once we crossed the Great Divide and enjoyed mid twenties blue sky and had to use sunscreen . We move around and take a few pics always run into other blokes and have a brief catch up and spend lots of time in the pits and of course watch the races
Late afternoon we jump back on the bikes and ride up the Hume Highway to our digs at Seymour ,a few beers a big steak [ 600 gms] a wander around the town and off to bed by midnight .
Sunday morning late rise and over to a small cafe for a big bacon and eggs breakfast and back home via a few new roads , one of which I liked very much , putting the question to the boys " why didn't we come up this way ?" they answered..... " we did " ..

The weekend went off well , I suppose the key ingredients are the company the weather the event , probably really is ,only the company , but I managed to plan the fuel stops better for the thirsty Commando with the 11 litre tank and we didn't have rain or even wet roads , just really want to do it all again .
The starting line, I have a close up of the motor, number 29 the others are a Bultaco and a Indian twin , quite a lot of these racing some with four valve heads exposed rockers , like the early Rudges .
Close up of motor, number 29 a rigid girder pre war ES2 fitted in a cradle frame .I had a bit of a chat with the owner / rider and was surprised when he said that he is running a Rudge steel crank with a remade barrel to give the motor square diementions or close to .
Also note drain tubes from the valve wells ,34 mm Concentric carbi , and not shown third order lever to depress the clutch like a 20 s Ajay instead of the Norton spiral arrangement .I watched this bike race and was surpised how well it went , success is the sum of rider and bike .well done !
Our riders , over the years the line up has included a 500 AJS, R75 BMW ,ZX9 , ZX10, CBR600 , VFR 800 and this line up in every case the change has been to a bigger engine .
Most blokes that have a collection of motorcycles will understand that the focus of interest can shift from one bike to another and back again over a period of time [ perhaps even years ] it seems to me that the reason for this could be attributed to a number of factors .For instance the Cannonball Run in the US has had me thinking more about early flat tankers , when your resto has hit the wall and you need a grand of readies to tip into the project to move it up to the next level , well the project will just have to slow down . Sometimes its parts that stop the progress and having to work for a living is a decided downer , with a date fixed for a weekend getaway to the classic races the focus needs to be on the rider bike to get it prepped up .Despite not completely finishing the Domi , my focus for the last six months has been a collection of parts I choose to call a 1938 model 19 Norton , I have been for some time now studying Roy Bacon's Norton singles book and have admired the classic lines of the pre war rigid framed girder forked Nortons and thought if the bits come my way I'll grab them and see where I end up . I started with a bottom end of a model 19 82x 113 and a tank which I think is off an es2 or a model 18 and started adding bits picked up a frame on e bay from Tassie [ thanks Steve ] a set of Indian made girders also from e bay , motor parts from Sydney, gearbox case from WA various bits from mates locally and hours on the lathe making nuts and bolts in stainless steel .Being a list person I have a good idea of the bits I need to ensure that I get this bike running , and now I am actively looking for a back wheel and brake , front wheel and brake and the hardest thing of all to find a cylinder barrel 82 x 113 , as the chassis is virtually the same as the WD models there is a lot of repro Indian made parts available tool boxes, guards, forks, speedos and cables fuel tanks seats and so forth. I will post some pics below and get some commentary beside them when I get the time

The Norton Dolls Head Gearbox, still in transition with positive stop mechanism on top and exposed clutch worm lever, a great place for oil and dirt to live .Early versions were grease lubricated, then changing over to gear oils the sleeve gear is supported by a row of rollers as well as a bush which was dispensed with in the AMC boxes, also early vervions used a caged roller to support the drive side of the layshaft changed to a ball bearing and then realizing the mistake advocated a roller again .What is basically a Sturmey Archer gearbox has become the gold standard of gearboxes .

The guts of the motor , I had quite a surprise to find the flywheels have been lightened by oxy cutting the centres out , they are steel not cast ! not sure what effect this will have on the motor

Timing chest ..crank pinion engages exhaust cam and it engages the inlet cam so they run as a train of gears Norton said this reduced engine noise ???yet they reverted to the timing pinion engaging both cam wheels by the late 1940's ,this motor requires a clockwise drive magneto which I do not as yet have .Note early style finger followers riding on the cam lobes , cam timing became the net result of the follower shape interacting with the cam profile , this motor used flat followers note layer of hardface stellite ??
The tank I wanted to use was badly dinted in lots of areas so I bit the bullet and cut the bottom out of the tank this made it easy to fix the dints but I will have to get a skilled welder to mig it back together for me . These days my eyesight would prevent me from learning to weld to the standard I want for this job .I'll post some more pics of the tank resto as it progresses , I intend to paint it myself but it will need pinstriping and I will need to research that first .Steve Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10266332455434664712noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250848875433872905.post-29774227625265202662012-05-10T13:53:00.002-07:002012-05-13T14:09:17.499-07:0036 th All British Rally

This years All Britsh Rally was held on the 28th and 29th of April 2012 at the Newstead Racecourse Reserve .This event is the major works of the BSA Motorcycle Owners Association Inc, and the organisers bill it as " The largest gathering of British bikes in the Southern Hemisphere ! " a pre booked ticket to this event gets you a camp site for two nights, free fire wood, use of camp facilities ,a show bag of M/C goodies a very nice enamel badge ,entry for the raffle, prize this year a lovely restored 500 Ajay, out door movies Friday night and live band Saturday beside a bonfire , bakery lunch on Saturday at Maldon bakery and some stuff that I have forgotten .All this for $ 50.00 !!! too much to resist ,I was there with all the bike people wandering around chatting with other owners sitting around a fire at night [ didn't rain this year ] and generally having a great
time in the beautiful environment of Central Victoria . Here's some pics and a bit of comment .
M20 Beeza and owner , this guy rides his M20 from Mt Gambier to Newstead every year , the idea of the rally is to actually ride and camp , we generally cheat and trailer the bikes up and do the ride over to Maldon trailering the bikes allows us to enjoy a few creature comforts like bedding and food .But I do admire these blokes for their commitment and endurance .
Next stop was a couple of miles up the Highway and more pics from the past, I remember vividly sitting on the Domi and riding down that gravel road with Keith on his Ajay beside me , this was the place where I learned to ride and drive and shoot ,we towed a sled up a dry creek bed with a Austin car in order to entertain ourselves , all were made welcome here and all came away the better for it .
The bike was running well and cruising nicely so I decided to cut across to the township of Birregurra through to Deans Marsh and up to Benwerrin and roll down the coast at Lorne .When I hit the curvy bit I found I was changeing between third and dropping back to second in the tight ones mainly for the engine braking it was a nice run, no cars infront or behind .I rolled into Lorne and went straight through without stopping got into the curves around past the Pacific Hotel and thought ,will I go to the Bay or turn back ? Just one more bend ,its easy to find your self in Apollo Bay and realize you are now going to be late for some function, so I pulled over at the St George River went over the bike took a pic and stretched my legs .
The Domi started first kick [after tickling the amal] so I rode back along Mountjoy Parade over the Erskine and up the Colac road and got stuck behind a 121 Mazda . I rounded the car up and climbed back up to Benwerrin, but the motor was missing in the mid range, if I tried incremental throttle openings , it only liked full open throttle [common symptom of worn throttle slides] but not in this case .The problem is I have fitted a Amal Concentric 600 series carby to the bike I have it set up with a 27 mm bore, 40 idle jet, 3 and half cutaway slide , 106 needle jet and a 170 main jet, with these settings it was running pretty well through the gears but wouldn't wind right out, the plugs were telling me its running lean. So I ordered a 180 and 190 main jet and a new needle jet 106 from Amal in Wiltshire . When the jets arrived I installed the new needle jet and the 190 main jet and thats where I'm at now , so I think I have to lean down the mid throttle section with slide cutaway and needle position .
Once I got out of the hills the bike ran beautifully on the flats back to Colac , speedwise Its hard to tell as I am using an original speedo drive 2 to 1 ratio and an Indian repro speedo ,my gut feeling is that its showing 10 - 15 mph fast in the mid range, got some more tricks to try with this later on . All in all I'm very happy with the bike , it tracks well, stops well for its age [with the new front linings ] starts first kick ,vibration is not a problem the only annoying trait is not being able to select neutral when stopped . This is caused by clutch drag and it seems to me that you have to walk a fine line between drag and slip I'll have a go at this later . " So endeth the lesson "
Click on pics to enlarge, you will need to wait for them to load up .
Jules recently recalled when on one occasion he was pillion on Keith's 500 Ajay ,and were doing laps of the gravel road, but this time when hitting the highway instead of turning around ,Keith pulled out on the bitumen turning right and rode down to the creek over the bridge and right into the driveway of the property owners and from there back to the start point .Pretty cheeky considering they were about sixteen on an unregistered motorcycle on highway 1, and it wasn't the last time either !
The site is located on land abutting the local airport and has an old landing strip running through the centre of it, this lines up with the operational strip and we were swooped by light aircraft most of Friday afternoon , a minor matter more interesting than irritating ,they use this bit of seal to line up cars for sale ,we arrived to set up camp / site on the Friday afternoon, with temps in the mid to high thirtys Andy was keen to get the fridges plugged in to the batterys and in some sort of shade . When the camp was set up its time to tramp the streets and pick up the real bargains before the public are allowed in on the Saturday morning , but we found none! probably less than half of the sites would be occupied at this stage and some sellers kept stuff under wraps until the official opening .The afternoon progresses with sellers rolling in from interstate and setting up , so you wander over and peer into their trailers searching for stuff on your list . By 7.00pm the swap moves to stage 2 the social stage we pull up chairs under the annex and settle down to bike talk with a string of visitors who drop in with a couple of cans and talk motorcycles only .
When I first went to this swap I was surprised to see a number of special purpose vehicles made by the shoppers , the distance involved at this swap is huge ,serious blokes bring push bikes to cover the distance [ I have never seen all of the sites ]so carrying junk becomes a big problem in the past I have seen blokes wheeling push bikes with milk crates mounted ,bag trollies ,kids 4 wheel carts ,and then the hybrids ,converted ride on mowers with esky racks and shade sails and my favourite was half lawn mower and half a supermarket trolley, the driver sat over the motor and the thing articulated in the middle to steer a bit like a scraper. Unfortunately they had to crack down on all these motorised units and you don't see them any more .
It was a half truth really ,but I thought he deserved 10 points for the quick retort .
I found a map showing an approximate area designated "motor cycle area"we're about in the middle of that zone . One little tip for anybody thinking of pitching a tent near the tarmac ,they will need a small sledge hammer and good sturdy tent pegs .Steve Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10266332455434664712noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250848875433872905.post-66676056275857581462012-02-07T12:11:00.000-08:002012-02-07T12:23:57.343-08:00Revised Club Permit Scheme VictoriaVic Roads , the governing body in Victoria AUS have done us a great favour by introducing this new club registration scheme . It came into effect on February 1 2011, I had the Commando on the Red plates on the 14 th , the day before the full rego ran out. The cost of the full rego for the Commando was $ 444.40 the Red plate rego for this year $ 66.10 . I now have the Dominator on Red plates as of the 10 th of January ,I found it interesting to note that the rego number of the commando is 1782-H and the Domi is 3284-H leaving 1502 plates in between the 14 th of Feb 2011 and the 10 th Jan 2012. Works out at 136 bikes a month , actually its 136 number plates a month , these plates may be in the rack at Vic Roads or on bikes ?. Not too sure if the bean counters have done due dilligence in this matter but things that seem too good to be true usually are not ,or at least short lived .
The scheme requires that the vehicle be in excess of the age for the category [25 years in my case ] I think for Historic plates ,you must be a financial member of a approved club , you must fill out a simple log book for each trip .You can choose to have 90 days or 45 day rego for the year .The club that I belong to has set subs at $ 30.00 PA and if the vehicle is pre 1980 a club officer does the vehicle inspection at no cost and a current roadworthy is not required .
Malcolm Fraser is wrong ! I have found the free meal of motorcycling ,I have a debt of gratitude to the the club people who lobby government for my benefit and at there cost , so I resolve to make an effort to support the local club and its events .

Steve Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10266332455434664712noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250848875433872905.post-4525354410949617432012-02-06T12:27:00.000-08:002012-02-07T11:14:38.050-08:00Colac Heritage FestivalThe Colac Collectable Car Club ,that enables me to qualify for the club permit registration, usually supports the Heritage Festival by providing a display from the members collections .Now that I have fixed the Domi's gearbox I thought I would ride the Domi in and leave it there for the day .I had a chat with a few blokes and a wander around talking to other exhibitors , the committee decides on a theme each year and this year it was Fordson Tractors Ford Cars and the Potatoe and Wool industries.I took a couple of shots of bikes ,a Military M20 and one with a chair [very nice ].

The mind jumps to the famous line from Breaker Morant " We found them and we shot them under rule 303 " and in the light of the circumstances decided to post again .What I needed to tell of on the blog was Sundays disaster ,somwhat akin to Morants , Hell bent on a ride despite Vic Roads tardy postage of my red plates , I geared up filled out the log book and rode to the highway and returned ,the Domi was running like a dog .I then stripped the carbi and cleaned the plugs ,that did the trick ,running much better now I shot out the drive and stalled the motor giving way to a local on my right at the bitumen . One kick and I'm off ,yes the motor fires clutch in ,up on the right toe and out with the clutch and off ? yes ! but, with a nasty crunch . As Jules says " long story short " the bike made it down to the rail crossing and back to the shed I pulled the box out and stripped it and found the smallest gear on the mainshaft normally has 13 teeth but mine only had 12 the broken tooth fell into the 29 tooth KS gear and fractured the gearbox case from one of the studs back about two inches.

Adding insult to injury I later noticed that the nice little red plastic lens had fallen out of my repro Lucas MT 110 tail light

.During the 39-45 war they needed to fly aircraft over the bombsite to assess the effectiveness of the damage, this was not neccessary in my case. The upshot of it all, is not as bad as appears, the case can be welded up easily or I can use a spare I have and I will borrow the MS pinion from ES2 [Peter]to pay Domi[Paul] ,but just sometimes when the frustrations and disappointments almost knock you down ,It's a good time to find a cold beer and share the story with kindred spirits on the Blog .Steve Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10266332455434664712noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250848875433872905.post-66792239226810773372012-01-14T11:49:00.000-08:002012-01-23T11:46:42.550-08:00Colac Custom Car and Bike Show

Saturday morning dilemma ,will I take the Domi to the show or will I have a quick look and get home to the shed and swap that front tube etc etc and go for a ride [ the first legal one ], what to do ? . I decided to take the bike to the show for the general public's gratification , so I caught up with most of the local" old bike fraterity" and we grouped in a corner surrounded by a sea of Harley Davidsons .The bikes included ,a Ural ,two R60 leading link BMW's a early Sunbeam single, two 1000cc HRD's ,two Commando's a rigid long stroke A7,a SA Goldie ,B33 ,A10 a very early Triumph two beautiful rigid model 18 Ajays a rigid ES2 [early Roadholders and early motor]and Les took in his Godin powered race outfit ,which attracted a lot of attention when fired up ! .Unfortunately I had some camera trouble and only took some close ups .Steve Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10266332455434664712noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250848875433872905.post-56098260757843935932012-01-10T12:25:00.000-08:002012-01-23T01:05:31.377-08:00Norton Model 7 Dominator Why ?As I see things, the British motorcycle industry was running along nicely through the good times between the wars ,various company's produced V twins for speed, status or for dragging a sidecar along, and a range of singles from around 250 cc to 633 cc . The single's were built in side valve ,over head valve and over head camshaft format and a few small two strokes were on offer too .
You could get a big single to do whatever you wanted , small for economy , big SV for a chair , SOHC 490 for sport or a DOHC 490 for race [ if you need to set records in a outfit you could order a 596 OHC ].Just about all the company's made a single and they had tried all the gimmics and wierd stuff to improve the perfomance but there would be few real discoveries in technology after the end of the 39/45 war .AJS are generally credited with producing the first really sucessful OHV motor in the early 1920,s and Norton's single and double OHC motors were holding off the opposition on the race track perhaps by rider skill and reliability but they maintained the ascendancy won the races ,sold the bikes , paid the shareholders .
The big question is why did norton then go and design a parallel twin motor ???

Business mentality dictates that you need to be first in with the new ideas and be able to identify a winner early [ ask Kodak about digital camera's ], Well that sure wasn't Norton because Triumph had built a great little 500 parallel twin motor and bolted it into a rigid / girder fork frame in 1937, eleven years prior to the Norton twin hitting the market.
Norton was playing follow the leader on this one , around this time a small group of designers were working on projects for their bosses these men would be offered a better position with the opposition and would sometimes leave only to go back later . I think a designer could be briefed to work on a specific part of a machine and therby contribute to the design but in a minor way , another designer being given the credits greater part.

The blokes I want to write about are Ted Turner , Val Page and Bert Hopwood ,if these names don't mean anything to you they should ,here's why, these three designers appear to have all worked for Ariel at some stage both Turner and Page have worked for Triumph But only Hopwood had worked for Norton .I think this is how it goes, Turner does the design work for the OHC square 4 Ariel and hands over to Page, but prior to leaving he basically cut the motor in half and ran it as an experiment while at Ariel, he then moves to Triumph .Once at Triumph he Remembers the half of a SQ4 motor and how well it ran . From this came all the lovely Triumph derivative's ,Turner is without doubt the patriach of the Speed Twin , Tiger, T Bird ,Bonneville and so forth ,"on you Ted " he seems to have stayed a while and is credited with Triumph's success because of his styling input mouth organ tank badges chrome strips seats and stuff .Turner then moved upstairs and took on management roles it would appear he was good at everything !
Val Page completed the work on the SQ 4 and had done lots with their singles, once again sales rose after a styling lift involving the high level exhausts ,that Ariel red paint and judicious use of chrome the one I like is called a Red Hunter VH I think ?
Bert Hopwood had been employed as a draughtsman with Ariel and Triumph and had been under the direction of both Page and Turner at some time and would have been in the centre of the development work on probably the Triumph and the Ariel twin motors , guess what ? Hopwood takes a position with Norton
Norton had in the past employed Walter Moore and Arthur Carroll to do design work on the singles, especially the OHC ones but Moore got a better offer with NSU and left . Carroll was assisted by a bloke called Edgar Franks and I think that Hopwood and Franks came to an agreement over the work where Franks looked after the sloggers and hopwood rolled up his sleeves to play catch ups with all the other makers and get a twin motor in a test frame .The race stuff was controlled by Joe Craig and I mean controlled .

Steve Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10266332455434664712noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250848875433872905.post-62036621090473791832012-01-09T10:33:00.000-08:002012-01-09T03:33:54.508-08:00GenesisFirstly as a new blog I feel I need to explain the title, my first choice was Kickstart ,this was taken ,I thought of

using Crankcase but then tried for 79x100 ,for those who haven't ever owned a Norton this is the bore and stroke of a number of Norton motors . These dimensions have been used on side valve overhead valve and overhead cam motors from back in the 20 s and well into the 50 s these numbers are synonymous with Nortons and are immediatly recognizable .
This blog is about motorcycles fixing them riding them watching them race ,its going to be about people too , motorcycle people ! I hope to do some stuff on individuals and their obsessions with the machines [ I know lots of them ] some stuff looking back on rides and stunts ,the heartbreak stories like stripping a gearbox four times before getting it right and there will be a big slant on restoration and mechanical stuff .I have received much encouragement from Jules [ tarsnakes ] to kickstart a blog and I committed to do some stuff in order to reciprocate with Colin DLR I feel like I am about to open up Pandora's box as I will need more time than I have got ,but what the hell here goes
So to start with ,the theme is Norton Dominator this will take some time to do justice to, the story starts around 1970 stalls for about 35 years and starts again I hope to carry the tale into the future by revisiting some of the places the bike has been and even to do it with the same mates and cousins that I rode with so many years ago, so I will post the earliest pic of this Domi here and take off from there .Steve Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10266332455434664712noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8250848875433872905.post-49611228252191353442012-01-08T23:59:00.000-08:002012-01-08T23:59:47.034-08:00The law is an assIf the law is an ass ,what is technology ? I have been experimenting with the blog and have been trying to correct some spelling mistakes ,but at this stage I either don't know how to edit the last post or it's not possible ! ,I may never know and because you can't ask a computer a question ,I am left hanging .Rather than advance with the story I am keen to conquer the format and get the "gadgets " in place before I invest too much time in the posts , I am making progress, like Scott of the Antartic only not as fast .Oh and a touch of humour to close on , What is the difference between the sales pitch of a car sales person and the sales pitch of a computer sales person ? ...................................
The car sales person knows when they are telling a lie .
PS is there a spell check on the blog posts ?
